Tomorrow international Arctic Forum will start in St. Petersburg with the title ”Arctic Dialogue”. The Arctic is the most important political themes of our time.
The importance of the Arctic is visible in the participation of the Russian President Vladimir Putin as the main speaker of the forum in the plenary session titled ”The Artic – Ocean of Possibilities”. The Kremlin press release tells that the topics of the session are, for example, the rationale usage of resources, environmental security, traffic routes, minorities’ rights, and other elements of the stable development of the Arctic.
Despite the sanctions, leading Western politicians will participate, such as presidents of Finland and Iceland Sauli Niinistö and Guðni Jóhannesson, and premiers of Norway and Sweden Erna Solberg and Stefan Löfven.
The politics of the coldest region of the world can be divided into three parts: 1) Geopolitics – interests’ of the nuclear powers meet at the Arcitc. The first investor gains also globally. 2) The economy – energy potential and logistics of the Arctic regions have crucial role in the global development during the next century. 3) Ecology – research of the Arctic helps to solve problems of the global warming.
Very important role will be played with the foreign minister panel on the topic ”The Arctic – an Arena of Confrontation or Cooperation?” Here we can hear Russian, Danish and Norwegian foreign ministers Sergei Lavrov, Anders Samuelsen and Ine Eriksen Søreide. They discuss how to reduce latent tensions and diminish rhetorics of confrontation.
Not long ago, President Putin asked the Russian government to prepare Arctic Strategy until 2035. Russian envoy in the Arctic Council Nikolai Korchunov announced that Russia will invest in the Arctic more than 86 bln usd until 2025. This is a message for everybody to develop constructive partnership with Russia in the Arctic.
